A ragged looking killdeer at the Conneaut Sand Spit in Ohio.
American Woodcock captured at the Erie National Wildlife Refuge's Holly Trail. This bird was hunkered down in a water puddle next to the boardwalk. Two joggers ran right by and didn't notice it until I stopped them on their way back and pointed the bird out to them.
I was staking out a nearby flooded area where this Pied Billed Grebe was swimming around looking for food. Grebes generally dive under the water and will reappear a few moments later in a different spot. As time went on, he got closer and closer. Finally, he dove under the water nearby and I held my breath scanning for him to reappear. When he did, he popped up not 10 feet down below my car window. He caught a very large fish and was swimming off with it when he turned back and gave me a glance. I found him at 700mm point blank, manually focused as he swam off and precisely sniped this shot.
