Getting tips from friends and other folks who know that I like to photograph wildlife is invaluable in the building of my portfolio. A good example was the tip that I got about this very unafraid kestrel that was spending a lot of time in the barnyard of a friend's house.
One of the first photographs that I ever made was of this skunk cabbage plant shooting up through the dead leaf litter. I was using a little toy compact camera at this time and I caught the photography bug hard. Like this young skunk cabbage plant, I was just starting to burst out of an old life and into a new one.
