I was cruising around my local haunts when I drove past this snapping turtle attempting to cross the road. These are hardly vicious creatures as long as you don't provoke them. That said, I have heard tales of snapping turtles biting a shovel handle in two. Tall tale or not, they would surely do a number on fingers.
One of my favorite hikes in the White Mountains is up the Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Ridge trails to the Cannon Mountain summit, then hiking down Hi-Cannon. It's a steep trail but it has a series of ledges that provide this view of Lonesome Lake and the southern White Mountains.
