Bluebells

Bluebells are one of my favorite spring wildflowers. We have some locations in the area that turn the early spring woods a glaze of soft blue due to the numbers of this flower blooming together.

Bluebird Box

I captured this photograph of a bluebird box at a nearby State Game Lands very early on in my photography days. I could never figure out how to present it. Years later, after applying several texture layers it takes on a painterly quality that I really went for.

Hider of the North

Calypso is an orchid of the north country. We traveled to the Bruce Peninsula region of Canada to find some. Very careful camera placement created this 'washy' looking image full of bokeh.

The Early Bird Gets...Mad?

The robins had been singing outside my bedroom window for only a few mornings before a late snow storm hit the area. I grabbed my camera to capture how the birds were handling it. As it turns out, they were not very happy about it and this bird clearly shows it.

Crystal Cascade

A few tenths of a mile up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail from the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center sits Crystal Cascade. At the foot of Mt. Washington, this falls drops a hundred feet in total. The upper section is seventy feet high, the lower half thirty feet high. *Full Disclosure* I cleaned up a fallen log or two from the plunge pool area!

Invasion

The spring of 2013 brought a Pine Siskin invasion to my mom's bird feeder. I spent about 8 hours standing out there photographing these very fearless birds. It was the first time that I had ever seen this species. This final image is the photo blended with four or five textures to create this look.

Albany Covered Bridge

Located just off the Kancamagaus Highway in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Albany Covered Bridge was originally constructed in 1858. It crosses the Swift River six miles from the town of Conway.

Bluebirds

This pair of bluebirds was sitting together staring at the last rays of a colorful sunset. The vegetation around and behind them was glowing soft red. I added red texture layers to create what I think is a dynamite canvas print. Admittedly, it works less well as a JPEG on a computer screen.

Hepatica

This Hepatica, from the Erie National Wildlife Refuge, is one of the earliest blooming wildflowers.

Amur Leopard

This is another image from the Erie Zoo. This is one the most simple images I've ever made and it required almost no post processing. The Leopard walked to the middle of his enclosure and looked up through a skylight. When it did, I made this image. Exposing for the highlights, the darker surroundings turned to black. I have gone back many times and cannot believe that I made this image in that spot!

Snoozing Saw Whet Owl

At a rehab center, a Saw Whet Owl basks in the sunlight and catches some z's.

Prothonotary Warbler

A male Prothonotary Warbler posed out in the open on multiple occasions on one of my visits to Magee Marsh in Ohio but I kept missing him. This time, I got him.

Illusion

There is a rise near the road that falls away down to where this doe is standing. The field rises back up behind her to help create this quirky illusion.

Lakes of the Clouds

Looking southwest from the Crawford Path on the side of Mount Washington. Lakes of the Clouds lies below, with Mt. Monroe just beyond. All of this approaching a vertical mile above the trailhead.

Peekaboo

This Great Horned Owl was injured and would never be able to return to the wild. I spent some time with him outside at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Ohio. He was very curious and would lean out and around the tree to get a better look at me.

Ram's Head Orchid

I made an expedition to Tobermory, Ontario Canda just to make this photograph!

Red Fox

After crawling commando style across a farmer's field, getting drenched by dew in the process, my advance towards a rise and a clean sight line to a red fox den was halted by the sight of this adult fox out of the corner of my eye. She was trotting back to the den after a successful morning hunt. Halfway across the field, she noticed me where I lay and stopped dead in her tracks. Suddenly, she dropped what was in her mouth made a terrible screech of a warning call to the youngsters nearby. She ran to the den and took all the young kits inside. I made a very quick trip up the field to see what she had been carrying. It was the head end of a female mallard duck!

Cape May Warbler

The Cape May warbler breeds in the boreal forests of Canada in the summer, and then winters in the Caribbean where its often found in palm trees. This migrating male perched on a branch above my head at Presque Isle State Park one May afternoon. There is just something a little bit tropical going on here that appealed to me.

Community Watch Program

I think we photographers sometimes get too wrapped up in travelling to far away places when there are great opportunities in our own backyards. This pile of young woodchucks was located right behind the hardware store in my town.

Red Tail Portrait

I had a field day with this captive Red Tailed Hawk. Its next to impossible to get this close to a wild one.

Small Purple Fringed Orchid

This is an orchid that likes boggy wet soil and is well distributed throughout the area that I live in. That said, its not something I see all too often unless I go looking for them where they've been found before.

Sandhill Crane

Textured Sandhill Crane photograph captured at Jasper and Paluski Fish and Wildlife Area in Indiana where over ten thousand cranes congregate each fall. This was captured shortly after sunrise while the early morning sun was softly lighting up the background.

Autumn in Ricketts Glen

There is so much beauty in Ricketts Glen State Park to photograph that I keep going back year after year. This is a cascade on Kitchen Creek that I hiked past on my way from Rt. 118 towards Waters Meet.

A Barred Owl Surprise

I was driving to get sweet corn when I drove past this owl on a dirt road that I seldom travel. He was sitting on a branch above the road, about 25 feet from my window. It took me fifteen minutes to go home, get my camera, and drive back but the owl was still right next to the road. I made over 500 images in the hour we spent together.

Goldenrod Monarch

I chased monarch butterflies all over Land o Lakes (a local game lands) before finally nailing this one.

Springfield Falls

Springfield Falls is located in Leesburg, Pennsylvania (Which is near Grove City). This was one of the first waterfalls I visited in Pennsylvania after discovering that there were scores of them across our commonwealth.

Grivet Monkey

The Grivet Monkeys are no longer at the Erie Zoo but they were always good for some nice poses! The only trouble was, the harsh lighting and their clashing light and dark features made them a nightmare to expose properly. After learning how to use HDR, I was finally able to produce an image of the Grivet Monkeys that I was very happy with.

Willet

Lying face down in the wet sand gave me an eye level perspective of this lovely migrant shorebird. Conneaut Sand Spit, Ohio.

Junco

A Junco watches over a feeder station on a cold winter day in Erie County, PA.

The Pemi

Photographed from the Sentinel Covered Bridge in the Flume Gorge, the Pemigewasset River flows with good volume through the White Mountains.

Got Mink?

The sun came out on a late winter day, so I grabbed my camera and took off for the Erie National Wildlife Refuge. I spotted some rustling in the brush along Swamp Road. A mink popped out! He was only there for a few moments, but it was all the time that I needed...

Lion

Generally when I go to the zoo, the lions are snoozing on rocks hidden away in the corner. Only on two occasions have I walked by and seen the male lion active. This is from one of those times.

American Kestrel

The American Kestrel is a raptor that often perches on power lines along the road. Generally they give you only a second or so to grab a quick shot before they fly off after you pull over on the side of the road near one. That is, they give you a second or so if you're lucky. However, this particular Kestrel had caught a mouse and wasn't so quick to take off.

Have Nuts, Will Travel

One of my earliest wildlife photographs, this chipmunk has his cheeks stuffed full of nuts and seeds. He hopped out onto a rock in my mom's flower garden to have a look at me before scampering off to hide his haul.

Bald Eagle

I once spent a week on the Upper Mississippi River freezing my butt off photographing bald eagles. The wind chills on the river were reaching -30 degrees F. However, it is totally worth it when you have 1000 bald eagles in one place,.

Autumn at Fallingwater

This is the iconic view of Fallingwater. I love the colors of a predominantly oak forest.

Sheldon Reynolds Falls

Autumn splendor in Ricketts Glen State Park is hard to beat. These stairs take you to the top of Sheldon Reynolds Falls via the Falls Trail.

Hung Out to Dry

One of my best strategies for doing bird and wildlife photography is to take my camera for a ride. I found this opossum eating rotting apples out of a tiny tree along a back country road. I pulled over and photographed him at nearly point blank range for fifteen minutes. He was worried at first, but quickly realized that I was less dangerous than the apples were delicious. The light faded; I left him to his dinner and drove home for mine.

Harrison Wright Falls

I wanted to create a photograph in Ricketts Glen State Park that captured the essence of what it is like to hike the Falls Trail. I think this one fits the bill. The trail follows along Kitchen Creek and affords views of approaching waterfalls one after another. 21 in all.

Kitchen Creek

On a hike up Glen Leigh in Ricketts Glen State Park, I spotted this interesting cascade. I got down very low in the stream and using a wide angle lens, captured this perspective. I love the white lines shooting out on the sides like lightning.

Big Run Falls

A hike up Heberly Run in PA State Game Lands 13 is a wonderful adventure. Its mostly bushwhacking deep in the heart of 19,000+ acres of wooded glens.

Painted Trillium

One of my favorite spring wildflowers is the painted trillium. I found this one while walking around a local game lands.

Snowy Owl

2013 was a record breaking year for snowy owls in NW Pennsylvania. On a frigid day in December, I trekked out to Gull Point with photographer friends of mine and made this image. The purples and blues combine to make this image feel like a winter day: Cold!

Metlako Falls

Located on Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge, Metlako Falls plunges 233 glorious feet down through moss and trees. I was so focused on Punchbowl Falls on my trip that this one took me completely by surprise.
